Do you love to ski or snow board but are bored with ploughed slopes and long lines waiting for lifts? Do you find yourself staring at remote slopes, steep narrow corridors and abrupt cliffs in virgin snow that no one has skied or snowboarded before? If so, then perhaps it is time to take the next step and go off-track and ski or snowboard where nobody has descended from. This type of snow sport is called “free ride” and its many forms are the ultimate experience for any skier or snowboarder.
The group, Kamchatka Freeride Team, together with the tourist company Vulkan Tours, offer you many forms of a freeride experience for all skill levels which will satisfy both beginners and professional skiers and snowboarders in a safe environment.
Backcountry-freeski/freeride in the form of climbing, means climbing up the slope to the start of your descent in off-track areas. While climbing, you will learn from your guides to “read the relief “ and to identify the condition of the snow at various parts of the slope. This will help you to have a better idea of the conditions of the upcoming descent and it will make your descent exciting and safe as you gain more knowledge and confidence with freeride tactics. You will learn which areas you may accelerate and which areas you will need to slow down as you descend the slope to avoid falling and injury. Theoretical and practical training on avalanche safety and use of equipment will be taught as well.
The tour is intended for physically fit participants with reliable ability to ski/ride on prepared slopes and having experience of off-track riding/skiing. Tour includes long-time routes (1-6 hours) when snow-shoes and ski-tour equipment are used. On top of the mountain you will experience incredible feeling of being proud of yourself, being in close unity with nature and being excited with awaiting you descent.
The number of descents per day usually depends on various factors and is usually from 1to 3. Height difference is 1000 meters minimum.
It should be kept in mind that regardless of the time, season or weather, it is impossible to 100% predict the condition of snow. Snow can be both powdery and icy, in different areas on the same descent. We will teach you how to judge these conditions, but it is still necessary for you to be focused mentally and technically for changing conditions of the snow during your descent.
When conditions allow, (relief, slope and condition of snow), another form of freeride using snowmobiles may be used to carry you up the slope to your descent point if your group requests it. This is just another option which can get you into remote mountain areas and on natural, unprepared slopes creating more options for descent.
